Online Safety
How safe is your information online? Just about every website you go to asks you to register. Where is that password stored? Is it encrypted? How safe is it? What if you use the same password everywhere you go online? If any one of these sites exposes your password, all your other online accounts could be in serious jeopardy! It has happened that passwords ended up visible in computer log files. Some sites have recently been hacked and the password files stolen!

It is strongly recommended that you have a number of different passwords for different types of sites. For example, all your accounts at non-financial institutions use one password and then for your personal finance sites, use a more secure password (lots of gibberish characters such as #$& and digits, etc.)

Credit card numbers are even more worrisome! The website may be secure but what happens to the credit card number after? Some small business websites and nonprofit organization websites will collect your information (including credit card numbers) and then print it on paper. It is then re-keyed into their financial systems. What happens to your credit card number on paper? Some organizations with hosted websites will have the information e-mailed, printed or sometimes even faxed! Telephone orders can be just as bad, they often write your card number on paper first! Yikes! Very scary!
