Get The News On Donors

Did you know that Google can help you get the news on donors? Just go to www.google.com, click news, then type the name of your donor in quotes, and click search. At the bottom of the list you will see "Get the latest news on <donor name> with Google Alerts." Just click the link to register with Google. Google will then send you an e-mail whenever that donor appears in the news. You can even create yourself an account with Google to manage all your donor alerts.

Sorting Alpha-Containing Numbers

Did you know that sorting alpha characters is very different from sorting numbers? If you have text items (such as structure node names in Andar) called "Group 1," "Group 2," and "Group 11," the "Group 11" item will actually be sorted between groups 1 and 2. Why? Because those numbers are considered part of the alphabet--and if you were to replace '1' with 'A' and '2' with 'B' you'll see that the sort order would be "Group A," then "Group AA," then "Group B." So how do you fix this? Simply rename the groups to "Group 01," "Group 02," and "Group 11." The leading zero will ensure that the 02 occurs before 11. This behavior is not unique to Andar, this is a common consideration in Excel and all database products as well... It's a computer thing.

What's in RUM?

Did you know that you can flag your service categories as to whether they are RUM or not? Resource Under Management (RUM) includes undesignated dollars, and dollars designated to your organization or its service categories. Some service categories may not be under your organization's control so a flag was added on the Main Bio tab of the service category accounts to exclude these from RUM calculations.
